CBS' Big 'Unit'
Mamet's drama swells from lead-in, overpowers 'Sons & Daughters'

Viewers stood at attention for "The Unit" Tuesday night, as the CBS show delivered the most potent premiere of the season for a new scripted series.

The drama about Special Forces soldiers and their families collected 18.5 million viewers in its debut, the best performance of 2005-06 for a freshman drama or comedy (ABC's "Commander In Chief" was the previous titleholder with a premiere audience of 16.37 million). That's the biggest viewer total CBS has achieved with regular programming in close to nine years, since its miniseries "The Last Don" in May 1997.

The show, created by David Mamet ("Spartan," "Glengarry Glen Ross") and Shawn Ryan ("The Shield"), also drew a healthy 5.1 rating in the key adults 18-49 demographic, placing it second in the hour to FOX's "House." In both viewers and adults 18-49, it built on its lead-in, "NCIS."
